Tips to Plan Your Summer Bucket List

Tips to Plan Your Summer Bucket List Summer is sacred for teachers. We put together our 2019 summer bucket list, and we hope you get some great ideas for how to get the most out of this season. If you’re a teacher or are a friend or family member of a teacher, you know how crucial our summer break truly is - regardless of how many days we actually get in the summer to focus on being normal, typically-functioning human beings, we cherish our days spent doing whatever we want. If you’re a teacher who has wondered, “What am I going to do with my days not spent with my students in the classroom?” here are some fail-proof fun ideas to get you through your rest and relaxation experiences. Start your own summer bucket list, and make this summer one to remember.   Try A New Workout   During the summer months, it can be very easy to focus more on liberating the “down time” that we have as teachers, but many educators struggle with finding the right balance between having down time and staying physically fit. Joining a gym or fitness club this summer would allow you to work out, swim, lay in the sun and soak up some vitamin D, meet like-minded people, read a book for pleasure (eek!), or simply blow off some steam that has built up over the school year - staying physically fit can increase your mood, assist in weight management, and fill in the blanks of your down time during the summer weeks/months as a teacher. Many gyms offer childcare, so if you’re worried that your sweet little one will be left out - have no fear! Ensure that there is someone to take care of your precious child while you are taking care of your precious self, both physically and mentally. Gyms may offer reduced rates for teachers and service men and women during the summer months, so chec k out the deals they may have for you. Get Together With Friends  This time you have with people who may or may not be teachers is vital to your overall well-being as a person; many times during the school year, we as teachers do not have adequate time built into our schedules for girls nights or social hours - hit these up while you can in June/July! Invite a friend you haven’t connected with in a while to coffee or lunch and catch up on all the dirt from your favorite Netflix shows, Bachelor/Bachelorette recaps, or small-town talks… this can make or break your friendships, so don’t let another day go by without seeing or hearing from them Plan a Weekend Getaway This may come as a surprise to some of you, but taking 3-4 days to travel to places around the nation is quite possibly the most perfect mini-vacation you could take, with or without family! A weekend in the mountains, a quick drive to the beach and a stay at an Air BnB, a flight to a major city to “live it up”, or visiting popular landmarks just an hour or two away from your hometown adds some variety to the weekend pool parties or cookouts. Budgeting for these trips is easy, because you aren’t traveling for long periods of time and many of the places that are popular to take mini-vacations to have great rates on hotels and dining, shopping, and attractions. Take a chance and go somewhere you’ve never been, but isn’t across the globe! #FrugalAndFun Schedule a Massage or Spa Day  This, too, can be done with your best gal pals, your sister, mother, or simply yourself. Take some time to refresh and recharge this summer at a local Day Spa - you won’t regret it! For the teachers reading this post, it may be in your best interest to get a deep-tissue massage or ask the masseuse to focus on your stress point areas (feet, shoulders, upper neck, calves) for a more benefiting experience. Turn off your cell phone, don’t answer calls, texts, or emails, and just simply live in the moment in an atmosphere that recharges and revives your spirit. I would want to do this a few days before school starts to “get my mind right” and to refocus for the coming year. Here are more ideas for how to rest and relax this summer for your bucket list.   Read For Fun Throughout the school year, I know that teachers spend the large majority of their time reading and studying for professional reasons; this summer, read books of your choice that have nothing  to do with education. Or, if they are professionally-oriented, ensure that they are lighthearted or extremely page-turning/interesting. Sign up for a monthly “Book of the Month” membership online through Book of the Month. For less than $15/month, you can select any book and it will get sent to your door within a week for your entertainment. If you are really feeling this, you could even invite some of your friends, relatives, or neighbors to join the club and read the same book and begin your own club. As always, during this important time of resetting, it is encouraged to do whatever your heart desires. Teachers are hardly ever known to truly take care of themselves, so this is the perfect time to be you and refocus for the next school year. Remember: you can’t pour from an empty cup - get your mind, body, and spirit right for the students who so desperately count on you for 180 days a year. What's on your bucket list this summer? Napoleonic Wars Battle of Trafalgar

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on October 21, 1805, during the War of the Third Coalition (1803-1806), which was part of the larger Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). Fleets Commanders British Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson27 ships of the line French & Spanish Vice-Admiral Pierre-Charles VilleneuveAdmiral Fredrico Gravina33 ships of the line (18 French, 15 Spanish) Napoleons Plan As the War of the Third Coalition raged, Napoleon began planning for the invasion of Britain. The success of this operation necessitated control of the English Channel and instructions were issued for Vice Admiral Pierre Villeneuves fleet at Toulon to elude Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelsons blockade and rendezvous with Spanish forces in the Caribbean. This united fleet would re-cross the Atlantic, join with French ships at Brest and then take control of the Channel. While Villeneuve succeeded in escaping from Toulon and reaching the Caribbean, the plan began to unravel when he returned to European waters. Pursued by Nelson, whom he feared, Villeneuve suffered a minor defeat at the Battle of Cape Finisterre  on July 22, 1805. Having lost two ships of the line to Vice Admiral Robert Calder, Villeneuve put into port at Ferrol, Spain. Ordered by Napoleon to proceed to Brest, Villeneuve instead turned south towards Cadiz to elude the British. With no sign of Villeneuve by late August, Napoleon transferred his invasion force at Boulogne to operations in Germany. While the combined Franco-Spanish fleet was at anchor in Cadiz, Nelson returned to England for a brief rest. Preparing for Battle While Nelson was in England, Admiral William Cornwallis, commanding the Channel Fleet, dispatched 20 ships of the line south for operations off Spain. Learning that Villeneuve was at Cadiz on September 2, Nelson immediately made preparations to join the fleet of Spain with his flagship HMS Victory (104 guns). Reaching Cadiz on September 29, Nelson took command from Calder. Conducting a loose blockade off Cadiz, Nelsons supply situation quickly degraded and five ships of the line were dispatched to Gibraltar. Another was lost when Calder departed for his court-martial regarding his actions at Cape Finisterre. In Cadiz, Villeneuve possessed 33 ships of the line, but his crews were short on men and experience. Receiving orders to sail for the Mediterranean on September 16, Villeneuve delayed as many of his officers felt it best to remain in port. The admiral resolved to put to sea on October 18 when he learned that Vice-Admiral Franà §ois Rosily had arrived in Madrid to relieve him. Straggling out of port the next day, the fleet formed into three columns and began sailing southwest towards Gibraltar. That evening, the British were spotted in pursuit and the fleet formed into a single line. England Expects... Following Villeneuve, Nelson led a force of 27 ships of the line and four frigates. Having contemplated the approaching battle for some time, Nelson sought to achieve a decisive victory rather than the typically inconclusive engagement that often occurred in the Age of Sail. To do so, he planned to abandon the standard line of battle and sail directly at the enemy in two columns, one towards the center and the other the rear. These would break the enemy line in half and allow the rear-most ships to be surrounded and destroyed in a pell-mell battle while the enemy van was unable to assist. The disadvantage of these tactics was that his ships would be under fire during the approach to the enemy line. Having thoroughly discussed these plans with his officers in the weeks before the battle, Nelson intended to lead the column striking the enemy center, while Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, aboard HMS Royal Sovereign (100), commanded the second column. Around 6:00 AM on October 21, while northwest of Cape Trafalgar, Nelson gave the order to prepare for battle. Two hours later, Villeneuve ordered his fleet to reverse their course and return to Cadiz. With difficult winds, this maneuver wreaked havoc with Villeneuve’s formation, reducing his line of battle to ragged crescent. Having cleared for action, Nelsons columns bore down on the Franco-Spanish fleet around 11:00 AM. Forty-five minutes later, he instructed his signal officer, Lieutenant John Pasco to hoist the signal England expects every man will do his duty. Moving slowly due to light winds, the British were under enemy fire for nearly an hour until they reached Villeneuves line. A Legend Lost The first to reach the enemy was Collingwoods Royal Sovereign. Charging between the massive Santa Ana (112) and Fougueux (74), Collingwoods lee column was soon embroiled in the pell-mell fight that Nelson desired. Nelsons weather column broke through between the French admirals flagship, Bucentaure (80) and Redoubtable (74), with Victory firing a devastating broadside that raked the former. Pressing on, Victory moved to engage Redoubtable as other British ships hammered Bucentaure before seeking single-ship actions. With his flagship entwined with Redoubtable, Nelson was shot in the left shoulder by a French marine. Piercing his lung and lodging against his spine, the bullet caused Nelson to fall to the deck with the exclamation, They finally succeeded, I am dead! As Nelson was taken below for treatment, the superior training and gunnery of his seamen were winning out across the battlefield. As Nelson lingered, he fleet captured or destroyed 18 ships of the Franco-Spanish fleet, including Villeneuves Bucentaure. Around 4:30 PM, Nelson died just as the fighting was concluding. Taking command, Collingwood began preparing his battered fleet and prizes for a storm that was approaching. Assaulted by the elements, the British were only able to retain four of the prizes, with one exploding, twelve founderings or going ashore, and one recaptured by its crew. Four of the French ships that had escaped Trafalgar were taken at the Battle of Cape Ortegal on November 4. Of the 33 ships of Villeneuves fleet that had departed Cadiz, only 11 returned. Aftermath One of the greatest naval victories in British history, the Battle of Trafalgar saw Nelson capture/destroy 18 ships. In addition, Villeneuve lost 3,243 killed, 2,538 wounded, and around 7,000 captured. British losses, including Nelson, numbered 458 killed and 1,208 wounded. One of the greatest naval commanders of all time, Nelsons body was returned to London where he received a state funeral before being interred at St. Pauls Cathedral. In the wake of Trafalgar, the French ceased to pose a significant challenge to the Royal Navy for the duration of the Napoleonic Wars. Despite Nelsons success at sea, the War of the Third Coalition ended in Napoleons favor following land victories at Ulm and Austerlitz.

Wife of Bath Free Essays

Geoffrey Chaucer expresses present day realities throughout his novel The Canterbury Tales. Throughout the Wife of Bath’s prologue, the wife illustrates her actions to be equal to those of a feminist. The wife pleads to stand out without conforming to societal standards. We will write a custom essay sample on Wife of Bath or any similar topic only for you Order Now Feminism is defined as the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. During the 14thcentury, it was likely that the Wife of Bath was thought of as a destructive rebel. In modern times our society considers the Wife of Bath to be a revolutionary feminist who refuses to conform to the expectations of women during her time. The thought of women continuously desiring attention from a man and always being sought out to express promiscuous actions is a reality revealed in the Wife of Bath’s Prologue. Lines 263 through 270 of the Wife of Bath’s Prologue reveal the wife’s view upon how men illustrate the actions of women. And if she is ugly, you say that she covets every man she sees; for she will leap on him like a spaniel until she finds some man who will buy her wares. † The quote explains that this woman is not able to persuade a man or even capable of being pursued because her looks are not appeasing, she must use her sexuality in order to have her way or get what ever she wants. Though this may be a negative view of women, this simply says women receive no recognition. Whatever a woman does, it is never good enough for a ma n’s desire. The Wife of Bath’s Prologue also expresses the idea of women not pleased or wanting to be controlled neither having a master but instead searching for sovereignty in relationships. The 14th Century was a very relevant time of which women were controlled by their husbands. â€Å"We don’t love a man who carefully watches where we go; we want to be at large. † (Lines 321-322) This quote simply explains that women do not want to be controlled, as men do – they also want power of themselves and to go about things as they please. Women sometimes go after a love that they do not possess for the purpose of gaining more power. How to cite Wife of Bath, Papers

International Student Response free essay sample

I used to feel that I knew a lot about stress. Having just completed high school, and the IB diploma at that, Ive spent the past year in a mild state of shock. There have been tears, nervous breakdowns, an unusual amount of minties being eaten, and even a fainting incident. I perceived this to be stress. Yet I now know that it wasnt. These feelings were just a shadow of what real stress can be. My mum kept it from me during my exams, but when I came home after 6 years of boarding school thinking that my life was about to start†¦ well, it turns out nothing is that easy. Shes been sick for a long time. But it was a manageable sickness. Not this. My mother has cancer. Ive looked at the statistics. Her survival rate is supposedly 50% for 5 years, 12% for 10. Being immunocompromised, however, it is highly unlikely this will be the case. We will write a custom essay sample on International Student Response or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My mother raised me. She sacrificed everything so that I could have the opportunities that Ive had. I truly believe she is the only person in the world I truly love, and quite possibly the only reason why I consider myself to be a good person. And now she is a dead girl walking. You ask why Im willing to leave everything and travel half way across the world to study at your institute. I answer you this: its the hardest decision Ive yet had to make. The knowledge that I could leave, and she not be here upon my return, haunts me. But I know two things. The first: my mother would never forgive me if I didnt take every opportunity available to make myself into the best possible person I can be. The second: I would never forgive myself. I want to make something clear. I am not running away from something, but towards something. I am running towards what I hope will be my new life. A different future. My life can no longer be what I wanted it to be. So I will do everything to make it better then I ever thought possible.

10 Tips to Balance Parallel Sentence Structure

10 Tips to Balance Parallel Sentence Structure 10 Tips to Balance Parallel Sentence Structure 10 Tips to Balance Parallel Sentence Structure By Mark Nichol In crafting sentences that compare one thing to another or represent one thought in contrast to another, writers often omit key words or phrases because they misunderstand how one phrase is balanced against another. In constructing sentences with parallel structure, think of the two parallel elements as figures on a seesaw, and the connecting word or phrase as the fulcrum, then check whether the elements on either side of the fulcrum are equally balanced: 1. â€Å"We often pay more attention to them than our own children.† This ambiguous sentence means either that we pay more attention to something than we do to our children, or that we pay more attention to something than our children do. This slight revision reflects that the writer meant the former choice. (â€Å"We pay more attention to them† is balanced against â€Å"[we pay attention)] to our own children.†): â€Å"We often pay more attention to them than [we pay] to our own children.† 2. â€Å"His version is created not with brush and ink, but countless Lego blocks.† The parallel phrases in this sentence, balanced by the fulcrum but, are not â€Å"with brush and ink† and â€Å"countless Lego blocks,† but â€Å"brush and ink† and â€Å"countless Lego blocks,† so repeat with: â€Å"His version is created not with brush and ink, but with countless Lego blocks.† 3. â€Å"The story here is not one of privacy infringement so much as the way real estate is changing because of technology.† The fulcrum in this sentence is â€Å"so much as,† and the phrase â€Å"is not one of privacy infringement† must be balanced against one that starts with the same verb: â€Å"The story here is not one of privacy infringement so much as it is the way real estate is changing because of technology.† 4. â€Å"The rainwater boon isn’t so much about taste as reliability in a region where hundreds of wells dried up in the last drought.† This sentence has the same fulcrum as the previous example does, but notice how the sentence reads more smoothly and has more impact because of the inversion of the constituent phrases: â€Å"In a region where hundreds of wells dried up in the last drought, the rainwater boon isn’t so much about taste as it is about reliability.† 5. â€Å"They protect consumers from purchasing products that are not effective or even dangerous.† Without the repetition of the phrase â€Å"that are,† this sentence crashes to a halt with the false parallel terms effective or dangerous. Omit the first word and the fulcrum from the equation, and the resulting sentence, â€Å"They protect consumers from purchasing products that are not even dangerous,† does not retain the meaning. The point about dangerous products needs a complete phrase: â€Å"They protect consumers from purchasing products that are not effective or that are even dangerous.† 6. â€Å"They believe in cultural and racial diversity, but not diversity of opinions.† Take away the first phrase, and you’re left with an omission in â€Å"They (don’t) believe diversity of opinions,† so the preposition in must accompany both phrases: â€Å"They believe in cultural and racial diversity, but not in diversity of opinions.† 7. â€Å"Thanks for your generous assistance and support of these books.† If â€Å"and support† is omitted, the phrase â€Å"assistance of these books† stands out as faulty, so repair the error with one of these two options: â€Å"Thanks for your generous assistance with and support of these books,† or â€Å"Thanks for your generous assistance and for your support of these books.† Better yet, perhaps, is â€Å"Thanks for your generous assistance in supporting these books.† 8. Beagles rely on their acute sense of smell to chase their quarry and alert hunters with their high-pitched barks. Beagles rely on smell to chase their quarry and alert the hunters? No. Their smelling and their barking are two parallel attributes. This sentence requires two independent clauses with parallel subjects: â€Å"Beagles rely on their acute sense of smell to chase their quarry, and they alert hunters with their high-pitched barks.† (A fulcrum assisted by a â€Å"not only . . . but also† phrase might seem useful at first glance, but that revision alters the writer’s intent.) 9. â€Å"Those who clashed with the color scheme were getting fired or relegated to the stockroom.† Without a balance to either side of or, the sentence implies that people were getting fired to the stockroom or relegated to the stockroom. Repeating the verb clarifies that only the second option involved the stockroom: â€Å"Those who clashed with the color scheme were getting fired or were relegated to the stockroom.† 10. â€Å"Families have been leaving the city not so much because of the form housing takes but its price tag.† The parallel phrases here are (or should be) â€Å"because of the form housing takes† and â€Å"because of its price tag.† Without the following fix to the second phrase, the reader trips into a prose pothole: â€Å"Families have been leaving the city not so much because of the form housing takes but because of but its price tag.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Compound-Complex Sentence Worksheet

Compound-Complex Sentence Worksheet There are three types of sentences in English: Simple, compound and complex sentences. This worksheet focuses on writing compound-complex sentences and is ideal for advanced level classes. Teachers can feel free to print out this page to use in class. Understanding Compound-Complex Sentences Compound-complex sentences are sentences that contain two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. They are more complicated than compound sentences or complex sentences as they combine the two styles. Learning to write compound-complex sentences is an advanced level English learning task. Make sure you understand both compound and complex sentences before you begin to study the compound-complex sentences. Coordinating Conjunctions Compound sentences use coordinating conjunctions also known as FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to connect two simple sentences. Remember to place a comma before the coordinating conjunction. Here are two compound sentences as examples to review. I would like to read the book, but its not available.Janet is going to visit her grandparents, and shes going to a meeting. Complex Sentences Adverb Clauses Complex sentences combine one dependent and one independent clause through the use of subordinating conjunctions such as because, though, as, while, if, etc these are also known as dependent adverb clauses. Here are two complex sentences as examples to review. Notice how the two sentences are similar in meaning to the two compound sentences. Though its not available, Id like to read the book.Janet is going to a meeting after she has visited her grandparents. Remember that the dependent clause can be placed at the beginning or the end of the sentence. When placing the dependent clause at the beginning of the sentence, use a comma. Complex Sentences Using Relative Clauses Complex sentences also use relative clauses using relative pronouns (who, which, that, etc.) as the independent clause to modify a noun or noun phrase. Relative clauses are also known as dependent adjective clauses. I would like to read the book which was written by John Handy.Jane is going to visit her grandparents who live in Boston.
